Dell Inspiron vs XPS: My Initial Thoughts
When you talk of Dell’s mainstream laptops, the Inspiron and XPS laptops are the two lines of laptops that automatically come into the conversation. Being products of the same brand, their configurations can make it difficult to choose between the two models. One of the big things that set the two laptops widely apart is the price range. While the Dell XPS line is considered to be on the premium end of the laptop market, the Inspiron line caters more to budget-conscious users. Depending on the series, you can get Inspiron laptops at relatively affordable prices. For instance, you can get the 3000-series for prices around $400, while the 7000-series ones have prices that stretch up to $1,000. With their premium design, build quality, battery life, and components, the XPS laptops come at higher prices compared to the Inspiron line. Most Dell XPS laptops cannot be purchased for less than $1,000. Though the Inspiron line’s affordable pricing makes them a very tempting offer, their spec sheet, however, suggests a struggle in performance when compared to the XPS line. Our comparison units, especially, seem likely to confirm this notion. Not that the difference in their spec sheet is alarming, it just says enough to suggest a one-sided show of strong performance. All of this made it necessary for us to know if the XPS line is worth their premium pricing or if the Inspiron line has the better value to offer. Read on as we compare both laptops to conclude.
Dell Inspiron vs XPS Design, Dimension & Weight Comparison
When I took the first look at our Inspiron comparison unit – the Dell Inspiron 1520 -, I had no doubt that it was a comrade of the Inspiron 1720. From its appearance, the Inspiron 1520 is almost the same notebook as the Inspiron 1720, but smaller in terms of form. That being said, the Inspiron 1520 has a much more improved design compared to its predecessor’s, the Inspiron e1505. Dell has dropped its silver and white color scheme for a more striking and flashy one. This color change is seen mainly on the laptop’s lid. Our comparison model comes with a Ruby Red lid that exuded a refreshing aura of awesomeness. Rub your fingers along its soft-touch Microsatin finish and you will be filled with a tingling sensation that penetrates deep down the bones. The Inspiron’s dash of style feels as refreshing as being kissed by the rays of a setting sun on a summer evening. It gets even better. Dell makes the Inspiron 1520 more lovable by making it possible to customize the laptop from a variety of colors and finishes they offer. Though this is not a new idea when it comes to laptop styling, Dell certainly offers one of the most refreshing color and finishing options. Based on your preference, you can choose a Glossy White finish, standard Matte Black, or our unit’s Microsatin finish. These finishes are made available in Espresso Brown, Ruby Red, Midnight Blue, Bubblegum Pink, Alpine White, Spring Green, Jet Black, and Sunshine Yellow. With these options, Dell spoils its customers with a wide range of color collections. Furthermore, the Inspiron 1520’s casing appears and feels very robust. In other words, the laptop feels extremely solid. The Inspiron 1520 is one of those laptops that can endure the ups and downs of long commutes. It can take a few knocks here and there. When I gently pushed and poked on the surface of the laptop, I barely noticed any flex or weakness. While being durable, the laptop’s Microsatin finish comes with the added benefit of being scratch resistant despite its classy appearance. This is impressive considering how most notebooks are prone to scratches. I wish all the good stuff could go on through the entire makeup of the laptop, but unfortunately, the laptop had a fair share of disappointments as well. One of these is the Inspiron 1520’s interior styling. For me, I felt the interior of the Inspiron 1520 failed to follow up with the stylish exterior of the laptop. Dell opted for a simple uni-design pattern. When you open the lid of the Inspiron 1520, you will be met by a boring deck and keyboard compartment. Speaking of the keyboard, the keys on the Inspiron 1520’s keyboard are responsive and they have good travel. However, the Inspiron 1520’s keyboard is much more outdated compared to the XPS’s keyboard. Nonetheless, the typing experience on the Inspiron 1520 wasn’t bad. When I took the 10FastFingers typing test on the laptop, I was able to hit 68 words per minute, which I found okay considering my average top score was 73 words per minute. The touchpad was also great to use. Though it doesn’t offer much space because of its small size, it was smooth and responsive. With all of that being said, let’s consider how the Dell XPS 15 9500 stands against the Inspiron 1520 in terms of its design and build. Looking at the Dell XPS 15, you begin to understand just how premium the laptop is. The laptop is extremely gorgeous from whichever angle you choose to view it from. Unlike the Inspiron 1520’s flashy exterior, the XPS 15’s lid has a simple design. Aside from the Chrome Dell logo at the center, there’s no single pattern of design on the lid. To my taste, the smooth silver aluminum makes an awesome sight. It has a glossy sheen that looks perfect on its slender body. With the nicely cut corners and edges, you’ll be compelled to give Dell design engineers their accolades for a job well done. As if perfectly molded by angels, the Dell XPS 15 looks like a perfect whole package. Every single part of the laptop looks like a component of an elaborate construction process. In my opinion, Dell has redeveloped an already excellent design to near-perfection. It wouldn’t be harsh of me to say that only the exterior of the Dell XPS 15 has the Inspiron 1520 beaten in terms of design. Don’t worry though, I will still go over the interior design of the Dell XPS 15. To express my opinion in detail, I will say that the interior of the XPS 15 is like another realm of premium of excellence in a wonderland. If the exterior of the Dell XPS 15 is a chest of treasure, opening the laptop’s lid is like revealing the treasures within. Beyond the CNC machined aluminum chassis, Dell dressed the keyboard deck of this laptop with carbon fiber inlays. For regular XPS users, this design pattern would be familiar. This carbon fiber adds an awesome texture that feels great on the palm. Running your fingers and palm along the deck feels like a form of soothing therapy for the hands. On the left and right sides, you’ll find a speaker grille that borders the edges of the laptop’s keyboard. Given, its large real estate, the speaker grilles do not disturb the keyboard’s layout. The XPS 15’s keyboard is well-spaced and evenly spread out. Its keys are about 9.7 percent bigger than those on the previous version. In use, typing on the XPS 15 felt great. I was able to type 84 words per minute on the 10FastFingers typing test, a much better score compared to the 68 words per minute I scored with the Inspiron 1520. The typing experience was much more enjoyable on the Dell XPS 15. Even the touchpad on this laptop was much better than the one on the Inspiron 1520. At 5.9 x 3.5 inches, the touchpad is also bigger than the one on the Inspiron 1520. Unlike the Inspiron 1520’s touchpad, it also performed Windows 10 gestures easily. Actions like pinching to zoom and three fingers scrolling were easy to perform on the XPS 15. One other big difference between the two laptops is their bezels. While the Dell Inspiron features an outdated bezel styling, the XPS 15 features Dell’s new four-sided Infinity Edge display. Hence, the bezels on the XPS 15 are much thinner, thereby enhancing an immersive viewing experience. The difference between both laptops’ bezels is like night and day. Considering how the XPS’s bezels make the laptop’s dimension even better, anyone would easily pick the XPS’s bezel styling over the Inspiron 1520’s. That brings us to the overall dimension of both laptops. Though the XPS 15 and Inspiron 1520 are both big laptops, the XPS 15 is comparatively lighter and more compact. The XPS 15 measures 344.72 x 230.14 x 18 mm, while the Inspiron 1520 measures 358.6 x 268.9 x 41.9 mm. Furthermore, the XPS 15’s weight ranges from 1830 g to 2005 g depending on the hardware configuration you choose to buy. Meanwhile, the Inspiron weighs 2902.9 g. Though I’m fine with it, the XPS 15’s slender build did come at a price. In terms of connectivity, there are fewer ports on this laptop compared to its previous version. It is also worth noting that Dell has removed USB Type-A ports from the laptop. I’m not too surprised about this though considering that they already did this on other XPS laptops like the XPS 13 2-in-1, XPS 13, and the XPS 15 2-in-1. Even with its somewhat limited port selection, the Inspiron 1520 still doesn’t have what it takes to beat the XPS 15 in terms of ports. In comparison, the XPS 15 offers a better array of ports. On the left side of the XPS 15, there are two Thunderbolt 3 ports that can be used for connecting to external monitors. Meanwhile, there’s a USB 3.1 Type-C port, an SD card slot, and a 3.5mm audio jack on the right side. The XPS 15 also comes with an HDMI 2.0 port. On the other hand, the Inspiron 1520 features four USB 2.0 ports and one Ethernet port. With these ports, it doesn’t come anywhere near the XPS 15 in terms of ports. In terms of design and build, the XPS 15 completely surpasses the Dell Inspiron 1520. It has a more premium and elegant design. Considering their design and build alone, anyone would pick the XPS 15 over the Inspiron 1520 without thinking twice. Hence, the Dell XPS 15 scores a nine in this Dell Inspiron vs XPS design and build comparison. Meanwhile, the Dell Inspiron 1520 scores a seven.
Dell Inspiron vs XPS Processor (CPU) Performance Comparison
Looking at their specs sheet, the XPS 15 seems to have won the battle before it even started. Offering a range of high-end configurations, the XPS 15 looks more powerful compared to the Inspiron 1520 that is equipped with a less advanced processor. To give more detail, the Dell Inspiron 1520 comes equipped with a dual-core Intel Core 2 Duo T7500 processor. It has a base frequency of 2.20 GHz and a cache memory of 4 MB. On the other hand, Dell offers a range of 10th gen processor configurations for the XPS 15’s processor. You can buy the laptop with either an eight-core Intel Core i5-10300H processor or a six-core Intel Core i7-10750H processor. There’s also an option to configure the XPS 15 with either an eight-core Intel Core i7-10875H processor or an eight-core Intel Core i9-10885H processor. I will quickly go over the details of these specification options to give you hints of their capabilities. First, we consider the Intel Core i5-10300H processor that has a base frequency of 2.50 GHz and it is capable of boosting to up to 4.5 GHz. It has a cache memory of 8 MB. Secondly, the Intel Core i7-10750H processor has a base frequency of 2.60 GHz and a boost frequency of 5.0 GHz. This processor has a cache memory of 12 MB. Furthermore, the Intel Core i7-10875H processor idles at 2.30 GHz and it is capable of reaching 5.1 GHz. It has an impressive cache memory of 16 MB. Lastly, the Intel Core i9-10885H processor runs at a base frequency of 2.40 GHz and can speed up to a boost frequency of 5.3 GHz. Like the Core i7-10875H processor, this processor also has a cache memory of 16 MB. For the record, our XPS 15 comparison unit comes with the Intel Core i7-10875H processor. In terms of real-world processor performance, both laptops performed well. The Inspiron 1520 proved to be a useful laptop. It was able to handle office tasks as well as light multimedia operations when I carried out my tests. The Dell XPS 15 was equally up to the task. I carried out computing operations like web-surfing, document editing, emailing, and spreadsheet document preparations. To a reasonable extent, both laptops turned in great performances. Though both laptops performed well in the synthetic benchmark aspect too, the results of the test put the XPS 15 above the Inspiron 1520. For this test, I tested both laptops across various benchmarks. The first of them was the Cinebench R20 synthetic benchmark. On this benchmark test, the Dell Inspiron 1520 scored 1086 points in the multi-core aspect. Meanwhile, the XPS 15 scored 3250 points. In the single-core aspect, the XPS was still miles ahead of the Inspiron 1520 in terms of their performance score. With a score of 159 points, the Inspiron was nowhere near the XPS 15’s 493 points. After the completion of this test, I tested both laptops on the Cinebench R15 benchmark. Across both aspects, the Inspiron 1520 was still no match for the XPS 15. In the multi-core aspect, the Inspiron 1520 scored a meager 524 points. Meanwhile, the XPS 15 aced the test with a score of 1391 points. I moved further to the single-core aspect where the Inspiron score 857 points, while the XPS 15 scored 201 points. The next benchmark I proceeded to test both laptops on was the Geekbench 5 benchmark. In this benchmark, the XPS 15 extended its reach beyond the Inspiron 1520. Not once did the Inspiron 1520 turn up a performance that threatened the XPS 15. To give you a clearer idea, let me give you the numbers. In the single-core aspect, the Inspiron 1520 scored 604 points. Meanwhile, the XPS 15 scored 1318 points. Though, the Inspiron 1520’s score was in the multi-core aspect was considerably better, it wasn’t good enough to challenge the XPS 15. While the XPS 15 scored 7799 points, the Inspiron 1820 scored 1537 points. After completing this test, I decided to shake things up a little bit. I did so by proceeding to test both laptops on the HandBrake benchmark test. The XPS 15 was able to convert a 4K video to 1080p in 10 minutes and 10 seconds when I placed it on the HandBrake test. On the other hand, the Inspiron 1520 took about 20 minutes 30 seconds to convert the 4k video. Though the Inspiron 1520 offers a satisfying performance when it comes to regular computing operations, it doesn’t perform as well as the XPS 15 in the benchmark tests. The benchmark results all go in favor of the Dell XPS 15. Clearly, the XPS 15 is more powerful. It can handle highly intensive processor-based tasks unlike the Inspiron 1520 that is mainly good at daily computing operations. From these results, we can see just how much more powerful the XPS 15 is. Hence, the XPS 15 scores an eight in this Dell Inspiron vs XPS processor performance comparison. Meanwhile, the Inspiron 1520 scores a six.
Dell Inspiron vs XPS Memory (RAM) Performance Comparison
Like in the previous section, both laptops feature a vastly different configuration. In terms of specifications, the XPS 15 outclasses the Inspiron 1520 again. While the Inspiron 1520 is usually shipped with 512 MB DDR2 RAM, Dell makes a range of configuration options available for the XPS 15. You can buy the XPS 15 with either 8 GB, 16 GB, 32 GB, or 64 GB RAM. This means that you can equip the XPS 15 with a RAM size that’s as much as 64 GB. Meanwhile, Dell doesn’t support a RAM size beyond 4 GB for the Inspiron 1520. The only thing both laptops share in common is that they both have two RAM slots. Asides from that, the Dell Inspiron 1520 and XPS 15 are very different in terms of their RAM. In terms of their RAM performance, both laptops are capable enough, but the XPS 15 still has more power. This was made clear in my benchmark tests. Even the real-world performance test I carried out on both laptops indicated a difference in performances. As you might have known, our real-world RAM performance drills usually test laptops’ multitasking capabilities. On the XPS 15, I was able to open 25 Google Chrome tabs, with about three of them playing 1080p YouTube videos. This process was ongoing while I simultaneously sent messages on Slack with Jon Bellion’s Glory Sound Prep album blasting at full volume. In addition to that, I started editing some documents on Google Docs. Through this test, I was able to witness the XPS 15’s monstrosity when it came to multitasking capabilities. It blasted through the full workload without flinching. There were no hiccups, lags, or stutters. Coming off the high energy of the XPS 15, I was disappointed when I tested the Inspiron 1520. Not that I expected a monster-like performance, but I was still disappointed. I first opened about 10 Google Chrome tabs on the laptop, with one of the tabs streaming Snake Eyes trailer on YouTube. When I noticed that the laptop handled the workload well, I decided to add a few extra operations. The moment I added five more tabs after I had started a movie download, the Inspiron 1520 started slowing down. It took longer than usual to open another browser tab. Even the cursor lagged when I tried navigating the screen. Compared to the XPS 15, this performance was not impressive. In the benchmark aspect, the XPS 15 still maintained its reign over the Inspiron 1520. The first aspect was the PCMark 10 essentials aspect where the Inspiron 1520 scored 3611 points. Meanwhile, the XPS 15 scored 9808 points. In the productivity aspect, the Inspiron 1520 scored 2308 points, coming in below the XPS 15 that scored 7994 points. To round off the benchmark tests in this section, I also conducted an overall PCMark 10 test where the Inspiron 1520 scored 1851 points. Meanwhile, the XPS 15 performed much better with a score of 5125 points. In conclusion, the XPS 15 outperformed the Inspiron 1520 in every aspect of this section. It displayed better performance in both the real-world performance and benchmark tests. As a result, the Dell XPS 15 scores an eight in this Dell Inspiron vs XPS memory performance. The Inspiron 1520, on the other hand, scores a six.

Dell equips the two laptops with completely different storage specifications. The Inspiron 1520 comes with 160 GB 5400RPM HDD storage. When you buy the laptop, you also get an additional 8-in-1 card reader for extra storage options. Meanwhile, Dell ships the XPS 15 with a 2 TB PCIe 3 x4 SSD storage. Dell also adds an extra storage option to this laptop. You get a 1x Full-size SD card reader for additional storage when you buy the laptop. In terms of capacity, the XPS 15 outshines the Inspiron 1520 by a lot. With 2 TB storage space, you will be able to store more files, documents, and applications on the XPS 15 rather than the Inspiron’s 160 GB. Also, you will get faster performance from the XPS 15 thanks to its SSD storage drive. Let’s consider a benchmark test to fully grasp the difference in both laptops’ performance speeds. On the CrystalDiskMark benchmark test, the Inspiron 1520 recorded a sequential read and write speed of 936.8 MBps and 268.3 MBps respectively. The Dell XPS 15, on the other hand, was notably faster. It offered a sequential read speed of 1617 MBps and a sequential write speed of 2054 MBps. I tested both laptops further using a real-world performance test. This test was a file transfer test that determines laptops’ storage speed by accessing how fast they transfer files. On the file transfer test, the XPS 15 needed just 7 seconds to transfer a 4.97 GB mixed media file at a transfer rate of 708.9 MBps. Meanwhile, the Inspiron 1520 took 4 minutes 5 seconds to transfer the same mixed media file. The results generated by these two laptops on the real world and benchmark tests are clear proof of the XPS 15’s superiority. We can conclude that the XPS 15 outperforms the Inspiron 1520 in this aspect too. Hence, the XPS 15 scores a nine in this Dell Inspiron vs XPS storage performance comparison. Meanwhile, the Inspiron 1520 scores a six for its low storage capacity and slow storage speed.
Dell Inspiron vs XPS Graphics Card Performance Comparison
With their spec sheet in view, it looks as though this is the closest the Inspiron 1520 has come to the XPS 15 in terms of specification. Dell offers two GPU configurations for each of the two laptops. You can buy the Inspiron 1520 with either a dedicated NVIDIA GeForce 8400M G or a dedicated NVIDIA GeForce 8600M GT. It is nice to see that both GPU configuration options are equipped with dedicated VRAM. The GeForce 8400M G is always sold with a 256 MB GDDR3 dedicated VRAM, while the GeForce 8600M GT usually comes with a 512 MB GDDR3 dedicated VRAM. In terms of their capabilities, the GeForce 8400M G has a base frequency of 400 MHz. Meanwhile, the GeForce 8600M GT has a base frequency of 475 MHz. On the other hand, the XPS 15 can be configured with an integrated Intel UHD Graphics or a dedicated NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1650 Ti. Unlike the Inspiron 1520, only one of the GPUs, the GeForce GTX 1650 Ti is equipped with a 4 GB dedicated VRAM. Now let’s et a scope of these graphic cards’ performance capabilities. The Intel UHD Graphics has a base frequency of 350 MHz and a boost frequency of 1250 MHz. Meanwhile, the GeForce GTX 1650 Ti offers a base frequency of 1350 MHz and it can attain a maximum boost frequency of 1485 MHz. For record purposes, our Inspiron 1520 comparison unit was equipped with the NVIDIA GeForce 8600M GT. On the other hand, our XPS 15 comparison unit features the Nvidia GeForce GTX 1650 Ti GPU. As usual, I conducted a 3DMark 11 GPU performance test to ascertain their graphics performance level. On this test, the Inspiron 1520 scored 1744 points. This score was still not enough to get the Inspiron 1520 anywhere near the XPS 15’s GPU performance feat. Believe me, I’m not exaggerating at all. When you compare the Inspiron 1520’s score to the excellent 12,865 points the XPS 15 scored, you can see how far apart both laptops are. In real-world gaming tests, the XPS 15 maintained its ‘King of the ring’ status. When I played The Witcher 3 on the XPS 15, I was able to enjoy the game at frame rates of 209.9 frames per second. On the Inspiron 1520, I could barely play the game. The gaming experience was not an interesting one because the laptop could only offer frame rates of 26.1 frames per second. Furthermore, I ran the Dota 2 Reborn on both laptops. The XPS 15 was able to play the game at 150 frames per second. When I ran the game on the Inspiron 1520, I was impressed to see that the laptop could offer playable frame rates. It ran the game at 39.4 frames per second. I took one last test before moving on from this aspect. This time, I ran Dirt Rally 2.0 on both laptops. While the XPS 15 offered frame rates of 247.3 frames per second, the Inspiron 1520 was able to offer frame rates of 32.8 frames per second. From this test, we can deduce that the XPS 15 can handle almost any graphically intensive task you decide to run on it. From AAA title games to video and photo editing, you can rest assured that the XPS 15 will do sufficiently well. While the Inspiron 1520 can run less intensive games, it is not powerful enough to handle highly demanding graphical tasks. It will be unable to run most AAA gaming titles at high settings. Likewise, it cannot get your video and photo editing operations done. Hence, we conclude that the XPS 15 is better than the Inspiron 1520 in this aspect. Therefore, the XPS 15 scores a nine in this Dell Inspiron vs XPS graphics performance comparison. Meanwhile, the Inspiron 1520 scores a seven.
Dell Inspiron vs XPS Battery Life & Performance Comparison
The Dell Inspiron 1520 and XPS 15 differ in this aspect too. Depending on the configuration you purchase, Dell Inspiron 1520 features either a 6-cell or 9-cell lithium-ion battery. Meanwhile, the XPS 15 usually comes with either a 56WHr or 86Whr battery. Our Inspiron 1520 review unit came with the 9-cell lithium-ion battery, while the XPS 15 came with the 86Whr battery. When I subjected the Inspiron 1520 to our battery life test, I was able to squeeze out 4 hours 50 minutes of battery runtime. We usually carry out our battery test by using the laptop being tested to surf the web with Wi-Fi under medium screen brightness. With maximum screen brightness, the laptop ran out of juice after 2 hours 40 minutes. I also left the Inspiron idle to see how long it lasts when it is not under any workload. After 8 hours 30 minutes, the Inspiron 1520 went off. In the case of the XPS 15, I was impressed to see that its 86 Whr battery capacity reflects on its battery life. Lasting for as long as 9 hours 6 minutes on our battery test, the XPS 15 will last you through a sufficient amount of time out of your regular workday. When I increased the XPS 15’s workload with its screen at maximum brightness, the laptop went off after 2 hours 2 minutes. Meanwhile, it went off after 23 hours 4 minutes of being in an idle state. Overall, both laptops have fair battery runtimes. The XPS 15, especially impresses more with its battery life despite its high-performance that should normally drain its battery faster. As a result, the XPS 15 scores an eight in this Dell Inspiron vs XPS battery performance comparison. Meanwhile, the Inspiron 1520 scores a seven.
Dell Inspiron vs XPS: Our Rating Summary
Dell Inspiron vs XPS: My Final Thoughts
Considering the fact that the Inspiron laptops could be bought for prices below $200, they are more affordable compared to the XPS laptops. However, their lower performance makes them a good choice if you want to just get a web-browsing laptop that doesn’t cost much. Overall, the XPS 15 is undeniably the more premium laptop.
